Where We Bow Down

Hello people! Do you know what this image conveys to you? If not, let me explain. The one on the left side of the image, kneeling down with folded hands, is Lord Shiva. And the one on the right side of the image is the Lord's son, Lord Murugan. Both of them are highly revered deities in Hinduism. Especially, Lord Shiva is also known as 'Mahadev', meaning the supreme lord.

Here, we could see the Supreme Lord bowing down devoutly in front of his son. Do you know why? This was an instance which occurred when Lord Murugan imparted the knowledge about the meaning of the pranava 'Om' to his father. This happened when Lord Murugan imprisoned Lord Brahma, the God of Creation when he admitted that he didn't know the meaning of 'Om'. All the other deities went to Lord Shiva for help, since Creation has to proceed. Shiva went to Murugan and asked him if he knew the meaning of 'Om'. For that, Murugan replied, "If you accept me as your Guru, I would impart the knowledge to you".

Here, we could infer that the Supreme Lord himself is bowing down in front of his son for the sake of knowledge. Shiva, well-known for his anger, could have easily outbursted, but what he did instead was bow down before his son for the knowledge.

If the Lord himself bows down before knowledge, then why can't we? It is necessary to concede before anyone who has knowledge about something which we don't. It is really hard to admit that we don't know something, especially when we find a person, whom we had deemed inferior, in possession of that particular knowledge. But, when we concede before that knowledge, the outcome is enormous. Shiva has not lost his significance just because he had bowed down before his own son. He still remains in the same place as before.

Because, the Lord knows that knowledge is the only thing that makes one superior, and not age or strength or any other factor for that matter. It is especially important to learn from younger people, because they constitute the future, and without their knowledge, one would fall back and stay outdated. No one knows everything. Every person could be unaware of something that the other person is aware of. It is no shame to submit before knowledge and admit ignorance. Only then, could one gain knowledge. Knowledge is precious. Shiva had willingly bowed down, because he knew knowledge is precious, and nothing could compensate the value of knowledge. But, people, sometimes, if the cost of knowledge is mere submissiveness, then it's a very good bargain and go for it! Because, not everyone gets the chance to trade with knowledge as easily.
